You could almost call this barrel a happy accident.  At a tasting event hosted by New England Barrel Company founder James Saunders to celebrate the opening of the company’s tasting room just north of Boston, he poured a previous Prime Barrel wheated bourbon finished in French Oak.  Then came the unexpected introduction: the perfect complement to that bourbon, a French Oak-finished rye.  Our tasting members couldn’t agree more.  What began as an impromptu discovery became an exceptional single-barrel opportunity when we presented it to a larger group during a virtual tasting.

New England Barrel Company is an independent bottler that sources, blends, and bottles distinctive American whiskey from across the country.  This rye shares its Tennessee roots with our earlier French Oak finished bourbon, as both were distilled at Pennington Distilling, a Nashville ghost distillery that closed two years ago.   

Built on a 95% rye and 5% malted rye mash bill, with grain grown at Renfro Farms in West Tennessee, this whiskey spent over 9 years aging in its original cask before entering a Medium Toast French Oak finishing barrel for a full year.  Extended finishing in French Oak brings greater dimension and structure to the whiskey’s powerful rye foundation, creating a bold, high-proof expression that’s not for the faint of heart.  

At 141.6 proof, this cask-strength rye delivers bold flavor but stays surprisingly approachable, without the ethanol heat often found in high-proof expressions.  The palate is anchored by assertive rye grain, candied sweetness, and maple syrup, layered with baking spice and mature oak that carry through the long finish, creating a compelling interplay between robust rye character and the influence of French Oak.
