High West "Gnarly Snowboard" Single Barrel Double Rye Whiskey The Prime Barrel Pick #10

Part of our outstanding duo of High West picks, this expression of High West's signature Double Rye! whiskey was additionally finished in Pineau de Charentes barrel for 16 months.

Pineau des Charentes, if you are curious. is a regional aperitif of western France, made in the départements of Charente, Charente-Maritime, and (to a lesser extent) Dordogne. While popular within its region of production, it is less well known in other regions of France and somewhat uncommon abroad. It is a fortified wine (mistelle or vin de liqueur), made from either fresh, unfermented grape juice or a blend of lightly fermented grape must to which a Cognac eau-de-vie is added and then matured.

The result is a whiskey that is delicious, distinctive, and unique. The expression carries the traditional High West bourbon signature, but the finish gives it a character. You can expect enhanced sweetness and mouthfeel (that's coming from Pineau des Charentes influence) combined with notes of dark fruits and berries. The expression comes in at 102.8 proof.

We were not planning on selecting TWO High West Barrels, but after tasting both barrels, we were blown away by the taste and uniqueness of each. It's not often when that happens, and when it does, we know that we had no choice but to get both!
