Every visit to NuLu offers a thrilling mystery of what whiskey might be waiting in the rickhouse. Will it be a superb aged bourbon straight from its original cask, or something uniquely finished?
Recently, a group of veteran Prime Barrel members, along with one of our newest members, had the pleasure of exploring with Chase Hazelbaker from NuLu. He guided us through the barrel storage area, where we sampled several exciting upcoming releases at various stages of aging or finishing.
The highlight of our visit was at the tasting bar, where Chase had prepared four barrels of nearly 9 1/2-year-old high rye bourbon for our selection. These sister barrels, distilled on the same day from a mashbill of 60% corn, 36% rye, and 4% malted barley, showcased their familial traits and distinct individualities.
After a lively discussion, we unanimously chose barrel 4 as our standout—no surprise, as it was also the highest proof at 134.2, truly the belle of the ball. This special barrel encapsulated the unique character and spirit of our tasting experience, making it a memorable addition to our collection.
Tasting Notes:
-
Nose: Classic bourbon, vanilla, toasted coconut
-
Palate: Rich mouthfeel, maple syrup, cola, mounds bar
-
Finish: Long, dark maple syrup, cinnamon on the tip of the tongue, natural maple syrup from a sugar house, and the slightest hint of oak at the tail end.
Proof 134.2
