For the first time outside the Kentucky distillery, a complete set of all ten Four Roses Bourbon recipes is accessible without the need for extensive bottle hunting. These 1.5 oz samples are presented at a strong 104 proof and are non-chill filtered. The package includes a link to a guided tasting video featuring Four Roses Master Distiller Brent Elliot.
Four Roses is known for its unique approach to bourbon, creating ten distinct "recipes." These recipes are characterized by their mash bill and the specific yeast strain used during fermentation. Each recipe is identified by a code:
O __ S __
In this code, the first and third letters are fixed, while the second and fourth letters vary. The "O" represents the Four Roses Distillery in Lawrenceburg, KY (originally Old Prentice), and the "S" signifies Straight whiskey. The second letter, either "B" or "E", indicates the mash bill – "B" for a high-rye content (60% corn, 35% rye, 5% malted barley) and "E" for a lower rye content (70% corn, 20% rye, 5% malted barley). The final letter, which can be F, K, O, Q, or V, denotes one of the five yeast strains used, each contributing distinct flavors to the whiskey.
The standard single barrel from the distillery is the OBSV recipe, while the small batch combines OBSO, OBSK, OESO, and OESK. The "O" in all Four Roses recipe codes pays homage to the distillery's history under Seagram's ownership, who operated multiple distilleries.
