• Age:  9 1/2 years, including the final 10 months in the new Kelvin char 4 barrel

• Mashbill:  74% Corn, 18% Rye, 8% Malted Barley

Tasting Notes:

• Nose:  Brown sugar, sassafras, toasted vanilla, citrus oil, seasoned oak
• Palate:  Burnt brown sugar, caramelized orange peel and dark baking spice, toasted marshmallow, char-kissed sweet oak
• Finish:  Lingering with candied orange peel, smoked brown sugar, toasted vanilla and warm cinnamon bark over soft barrel char

• Distilled:  3/26/09 by Buffalo Trace
• Age:  16 years
• Proof:  131 Proof
• Mashbill:  75% corn, 13% rye, 12% malted barley

Tasting Notes

• Nose:  Traditional notes of vanilla and caramel followed by black tea, light baking spices, pear and Dr. Pepper
• Palate:  Mouth warming and fiery, opens with cola, black cherry, velvety caramel, and vanilla layered with barrel char, cinnamon oil, black pepper, a touch of licorice, and black tea
• Finish:  Bruleed sugar, black pepper, baking spice, anise, and charred oak

Old Zach is our fifth BuffTurkey release and boasts a flavor profile all its own.  Where earlier barrels were described as Dusty Funk, Balanced, Cherry Bomb, and Fruity, Old Zach is Fiery.  This barrel delivers the highest proof of the five at 131 proof.

The Prime Barrel Selection Story

Sometimes the best barrels are accidental finds. When we visited Cox’s Creek Distilling last year to pick this BuffTurkey barrel, we asked what else they have.  That led us to the 136-proof Double Oak Barton gem.  We first found a hazmat barrel, but it had fewer than 20 bottles left.  This barrel had just as much flavor, a few fewer proof points, and enough bottles to go around.
