It has a nice dark amber color and great legs. Burnt orange spice is typical of Garrison whiskeys, and it's very present in this offering as well. The finish is infinite. It's strong but has a good character and a very memorable aftertaste. When we added a few drops of water, it opened up nicely and the hotness subsided. To us, besides tasting fantastic, it had the \"it\" factor we look for in our picks. More specifically, it was the most unique barrel out of the four, from both taste and complexity vantage points. The barrel was bottled at 105.9 proof and really is best enjoyed neat, but your mileage may vary. it has floral aromas accompanied with raspberry and confectionary sugar lead to the taste of orange sherbet, oak, and red fruit gummy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor the sticker, we wanted to pay homage to the hometown of New Riff Distilling, which is Newport, KY. Newport was dubbed by some \"Almost Vegas\" for being home to Racing and Gaming casino, providing good folks of Kentucky and neighboring states a place to come to a casino without having to travel to Vegas. Of course, nothing IS quite Vegas itself, hence the title of the pick - \"Almost Vegas.\" The sticker also reflects the bottle's tasting notes and has an interactive component to it as well. We tasted four barrels which offered a wide range of flavor profiles and shockingly high proofs ranging from 136.2 to 140.2, which is technically considered a hazardous material, or HAZMAT for short, as the proof is so high you wouldn’t be allowed to carry it onto an airplane.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe narrowed it down to two barrels and could have easily gone with either of them.  The first, a more traditional approach - focus on oak against sweeter notes with a rich delivery of flavors, the perfect bourbon to pair with a cigar. The second, a rich slurry of cinnamon spice, chocolate, tobacco, creme brulee, aged oak, and so much more - a flavor profile that requires no introduction but one that is definitively unique. We enjoyed a deal of back and forth and re-tasting before making a decision. So we saddled up and took a drive upstate to the distillery. Upon arrival, we were given a proper tour of the distillery (check out our Instagram account for more) and then presented with a few barrels to taste. While Taconic's straight bourbon and rye whiskeys are available in cask strength varieties, our taste buds were drawn to a different selection. One of the samples we were tasting was dumped earlier that day. Inexplicably, the whiskey was cut to 90 Proof, and…was easily the best tasting one of the bunch! The cognac influence on the bourbon was subtle enough not to overpower it yet delicate enough to give it more complexity and ultimately made it a much more delicious whiskey. As with any other selections we make, taste trumps everything else. Usually, we would stay away from lower-proof stuff, but this one was a no-brainer. At 90 proof, it will make a great, easy-going sipper that will be gone before you know it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a 4.5 years old whiskey that was then additionally finished in the cognac cask for 8 months. Amazingly, it was the first barrel we tried (we selected the distillery in the summer of 2021), and we must have gone through at least six other barrels. We kept coming back to the very first one, as it was easily the tastiest one. The barrel was bottled at 112.6 Proof, which makes it equally great as a neat sipper or with a splash of water. They use a wide variety of finishing barrels, and each adds a unique characteristic to the liquid inside it. We visited the distillery in the summer of 2021 to select straight bourbon (which we did). We were on the way out when we decided to try a few finished barrels serendipitously, and this Portuguese port finished barrel was just too good to pass up. The best way to describe it is that it drinks in layers. When you think you picked up a tasting note, another appears.
